Valley of the Kings
It took the Pharos a while, but they eventually realized building huge, easy to find, pyramids with gold treasure rooms was not a great idea. The Pharos then moved to the Valley of the Kings. This was a hidden valley where the Pharos were buried in discrete burial tombs. Deep tunnels were dug in the side of a mountain. The insides of the tunnels were intricately decorated with carvings and paintings. At the bottom, the Pharo was buried with his gold and supplies. To allow the workers to see in the tombs, a series of bronze mirrors were used to reflect light deep into the tomb. Pictures are not allowed in the tombs. We were allowed to go into three tombs. Each was a hallway with original carvings and paintings. At the end you could see the burial chamber. In one of the tombs, another guard pulled me off to the side. He pulled back a guard rail and let me see a restricted area of the tomb. It was very cool, unfortunately, no pictures were allowed. As I exited, his hand was out. The guard was paid well. (I must match some kind of demographic. The guards and street sales people seem to single me out in the crowd. There are a few more stories on this topic to follow.)
