The truth about London ...

The truth about London is that London is simply amazing. The people are nice, there is an incredible amount of history, you never run out of things to do, it is easy to get around, but ...
London is ridiculously expensive. Two dollars buys less than one pound. We converted 100 USD to pounds on several occaisons and got anywhere from 42 to 49 pounds. We quickly learned how to find the good exchange booths. But here is the hard part about the conversion, you still think of things in US dollars. The problem is if something costs one dollar in the US, it costs one pound in the UK. This means that you are getting hit with more than a 50% devaluation of your spending ability. (This really hurts.)
London is a very wealthy city. If you have the bankroll, anything you could possibly want is here. I used to think Vegas was the place for those with unlimited weath, I was wrong, go to London.
As an example of the wealth in London, the police drive BMWs.
All things said, London it still worth the visit. It is an amazing city and worth every devalued US dollar.

I fell into the same trap thinking that pounds=dollars when doing quick price comparisons at restaurants, etc. Where London is expensive - Tokyo is insane! Its not as much about the exchange rate, it's just that stuff just inexplicably costs more. Kind of like buying a bottle of perfume at Harrod's versus buying the same bottle at Wal-Mart.
